Maren Bennewitz

Since October 2008, I am assistant professor (Juniorprofessorin) at the Department of Computer Science of the University of Freiburg. I am head of the group for Humanoid Robots.

In the last few years, my research has been focused on enabling wheeled and humanoid robots to act more intelligently and autonomously especially when coexisting with humans. I have developed probabilistic techniques that enable robots to reliably detect and track humans using laser-range and vision data. My developments also include methods for face and hand tracking, head posture estimation, and gesture recognition.
I am furthermore interested in probabilistic techniques for state estimation in the context of mobile robotics, in navigation techniques for humanoid robots, in multi-robot systems, in vision-based systems, and in cognitive robotics.

See my research page for further details.

From 2004-2008, I was working as a post-doctoral research associate in the DFG-funded research group "Learning Humanoid Robots" headed by Sven Behnke.

From 1999-2004 I was a PhD student and research associate in the lab for "Autonomous Intelligent Systems" at the University of Freiburg headed by Wolfram Burgard.

I finished my thesis with the title "Mobile Robot Navigation in Dynamic Environments" in June 2004. Here is a webpage with detailed information (including animations) about my PhD work.

In 2001 I received an award for my thesis proposal at the Nachwuchswettbewerb der 4. Dienstleistungstagung hosted by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research and in 2004 I received the Wolfgang-Gentner-Nachwuchsförderpreis for one of the 3 best theses of the Faculty of Applied Sciences of the University of Freiburg.

My detailed Curriculum Vitae can be found in this document.
